Cost of Cataract Surgery in Singapore: What to Know

Cataract surgery in progress

Cataracts can lead to severe vision impairment, making simple activities such as reading, driving, and recognising faces difficult. Thankfully, cataract surgery can help restore clear vision.

However, one of the biggest concerns for many individuals considering the surgery is the cost of cataract surgery in Singapore. Read on for a detailed breakdown to help you make an informed decision.

Understanding Cataracts and the Need for Surgery

Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or dim vision. While cataracts can develop due to ageing, they can also be caused by prolonged UV exposure, medical conditions like diabetes, prolonged use of corticosteroids or eye injuries.

Cataract surgery is effective for removing cataracts and restoring clear vision. Cataracts do not improve on their own, and delaying surgery can make it harder to perform daily activities.

Types of Cataract Surgery

Not all cataract surgeries are the same. The cost of the procedure varies depending on the technique used. Here are the three main types of cataract surgery available in Singapore:

Phacoemulsification

Phacoemulsification, often referred to as “phaco,” is the most commonly performed cataract surgery. It uses ultrasound energy to break the cloudy lens into tiny pieces, which are then aspirated out before an artificial lens is implanted.

In public hospitals, the subsidised cost for this procedure includes a standard monofocal IOL. However, subsidised treatments may come with longer waiting times.

In private healthcare settings, waiting times for an appointment and surgery are generally shorter. In addition, private clinics provide customised, individualised care with the same doctor and greater choice of intraocular lenses (IOL).

The cost for phacoemulsification ranges from S$5,000 to S$10,000 per eye, depending on the surgeon’s experience, choice of IOL, and the fee charges of the hospital or day surgery facility.

Extracapsular Surgery

This technique is used in cases where the cataract is too dense for phacoemulsification. Instead of breaking the lens into small pieces, the surgeon removes it in one large piece through a larger incision.

The more invasive nature of extracapsular surgery makes the recovery period longer. This procedure may cost more due to the complexity of the operation and extended post-surgical care. Patients considering this surgery should consult with their doctor for detailed cost information.

This procedure uses laser technology to make small incisions and break up the cataract. FLACS enhances accuracy, reduces surgical risks, and often results in faster recovery.

However, because of the technology involved, it is the most expensive form of cataract surgery. In private clinics, the cost of FLACS is an additional $1400 to $2000 per eye on top of the basic costs of phacoemulsification.

Factors That Affect Cataract Surgery Costs in Singapore

The cost of cataract surgery in Singapore depends on several factors. While some patients may pay less, others may require additional treatments or premium lenses, increasing the overall expense.

Type of Surgery Performed

As mentioned earlier, the method of cataract removal affects the total cost. Standard phacoemulsification is usually an affordable option, while femtosecond laser-assisted surgery is on the higher end due to its level of technology.

After the cataract is removed, an artificial intraocular lens is implanted to restore vision.

There are different types of IOLs available:

Monofocal lenses

(The most affordable) provide clear vision at one distance, requiring glasses for near or far vision.

Multifocal lenses

(More expensive) allow for both near and far vision, reducing dependence on glasses.

Toric lenses

are meant for astigmatism and generally cost more than standard lenses.

The type of IOL chosen has a direct impact on the final cost of cataract surgery. While premium lenses offer better visual outcomes, they also come at a higher price.

Surgeon's Experience

The expertise of the eye surgeon is integral to the success of the procedure. Experienced and reputable surgeons often charge higher fees.

Medisave and Insurance Coverage for Cataract Surgery

For Singaporeans and Permanent Residents, Medisave can be used to help cover the cost of cataract surgery. The amount claimable per eye surgery from your Medisave account (or that of an immediate family member) ranges between $2,680 to $3,210. The amount is  dependent on ward charges, and varies between Hospitals or Day Surgery Centres.

However, if the total cost of surgery exceeds this amount, the remaining balance must be paid out-of-pocket or by insurance

Private health insurance policies may cover expenses for cataract surgery, depending on the plan. Those considering surgery should check with their insurer to understand what’s covered in their policy. Generally, the higher the tier, the more it covers.

Post-Surgery Care and Additional Costs

Beyond the cost of the surgery itself, patients should consider the expenses related to post-surgery care. While most people recover well from cataract surgery, follow-up visits and medication are necessary for proper healing. Additional costs may include:

Post-surgery consultations

Routine follow-ups to monitor healing and vision improvement.

Medications and eye drops

Prescribed to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.

Glasses or contact lenses

If monofocal lenses are used, patients may still need glasses for near or distance vision.

Complication management

In rare cases, additional procedures may be needed to correct complications.
