Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

Enjoy clearer vision for life with the right intraocular lens after cataract surgery.

See life clearly and regain freedom with the right intraocular lens

At Angel Eye & Cataract Centre, we believe that cataract surgery is more than just removing a cloudy lens—it’s an opportunity to improve your vision and quality of life. One of the most important decisions in this process is choosing the right intraocular lens (IOL) to replace your natural lens. With the right IOL, many patients can reduce or even eliminate their dependence on glasses.

What Are Intraocular Lenses?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses implanted in the eye to replace the natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. These lenses are designed to restore clarity and focus, and come in a variety of types to match different vision needs.

Balance for Distance Vision

If you spend most of your time driving, watching TV, or engaging in outdoor activities, prioritising distance vision with your IOL may be the most suitable option.

Monofocal lenses set for distance:

Balance for Near Vision

If your daily routine involves frequent reading, using mobile devices, or doing close-up work, you may prefer IOL options that can support near vision.

Options include:

Monovision Strategy

Monofocal IOLs provide clear vision at one set distance (one focal length for each monofocal lens)—typically either near or far.

Many patients who do not like the side effects of MFIOLs opt for a monovision strategy, where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near vision.

This approach of using monofocal IOL in a monovision strategy will aim one eye for far (aim plano) and aim the other eye aim between -1.5D to -2D can:-

Most of our brains can tolerate up to 300 degrees (3D or three dioptres) of power difference between two eyes. Hence monovision strategy described above is well within 3D apart, and would not give a giddy or dizzy feeling and will be tolerated by most people.

Dr Allan Fong will help assess and discuss with you whether monovision is a good fit for your lifestyle and visual needs.

Choosing Your Intraocular Lens

Selecting the right IOL is a personal decision influenced by your visual goals, occupational needs, daily habits and hobbies. Coupled with the thorough examination of your eye health from front of your eye to the back of your eye at Angel Eye & Cataract Centre, we guide you through this choice with care and consideration of your health and needs profile.

Here’s what to expect:

1
Comprehensive Eye Assessment

We evaluate your vision, eye measurements using the latest technology to determine the status of the eye and this guides in the most suitable lens options.

2

3

We’ll also discuss options like monovision or astigmatism correction to fine-tune your visual outcome after surgery. Based on your goals, we’ll recommend IOLs that best match your preferences—whether it’s monofocal, multifocal, or EDOF lenses, and whether toric versions are needed.

Our goal is to help you enjoy clearer, more comfortable vision tailored to your life.

What Happens During Treatment

Here’s a quick overview:

1
Numbing Eye Drops and IV moderate sedation anaesthesia administered

Your eye is gently numbed by anaesthesia eye drops to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. The procedure is also performed under local anaesthesia with IV (intravenous) moderate sedation administered by an experienced anaesthetist specialist who works alongside Dr Fong in the surgery. The well being of a patient is monitored throughout.

2
Lens Removal

The cloudy natural lens is removed using advanced techniques like phacoemulsification +/- femtosecond laser-assisted surgery.

3
Lens Implantation
The selected IOL is inserted and carefully positioned within the eye.
4
Recovery

After the surgery, patient takes 1-2 hours to recover in the day ward of the day surgery and can go home after that on the same day. Most patients can walk out of day ward using the operated eye to see. No eye padding is needed. A clear transparent shield is all that is needed and is advised for overnight use during sleep.

Patients notice vastly improved vision within days once initial swelling subsides.

Full recovery typically takes a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the most common queries about Intraocular Lenses (IOLs).

Will I still need glasses after getting IOLs?

That depends on the type of IOL chosen and strategy used. Multifocal and EDOF lenses reduce your need for glasses at various distances, while monofocal lenses will require reading or distance correction.

IOLs are designed to be permanent and typically last a lifetime without the need for replacement. They are all made of biocompatible acrylic material, and these all last longer than the natural lifespan of any human being.

As with all surgeries, there are small risks of infection or inflammation. However, cataract surgery with IOL implantation is generally safe and effective with risks quoted typically less than 1-2 percent.

No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with IV moderate sedation and is generally painless. You may feel mild touch or pressure sensation during surgery but no sharp pain.

Standard monofocal lenses are often covered by Medisave and insurance. Multifocal or toric may require additional out-of-pocket costs. Our clinic staff will guide you through the financing options. Please refer to our financing page for more information.
