Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO) & YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Regain clearer vision with Dr Allan Fong, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist

What is Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO)?

Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO) is a common condition that can occur at the back portion of the lens capsule after cataract surgery. This clouding of the posterior lens capsule (PCO) can lead to blurry vision, glare, light sensitivity, and difficulty reading or driving, similar to the symptoms of a cataract. These symptoms are not due to recurrence of cataract but rather PCO developing. Cataract once removed does not recur.

Causes of Posterior Capsular Opacification

The lens epithelial cells of the lens capsule is a living tissue, and it can grow and multiply over time, forming a thickened, cloudy layer on the posterior lens capsule. This occurs in the potential space between the lens capsule and the IOL (intraocular lens implant). This happens behind the intraocular lens implant (IOL) on the posterior lens capsule but the IOL itself is fine.

This thickened cloudy layer (PCO) blocks the passage of light. This can happen months or years after surgery.

How YAG Laser Capsulotomy Can Help

YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, safe and effective procedure to treat PCO. The laser creates a small opening in the cloudy posterior capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again. This restores vision almost immediately, with minimal discomfort and no downtime. The procedure is permanent, meaning PCO does not return after treatment.

What does YAG stand for?

YAG stands for Yttrium Aluminium Garnet, a crystalline material used in certain lasers. This material is the key component of the YAG laser which is commonly used in Ophthalmology to treat conditions like PCO. This laser is totally different from the laser used in LASIK.

Where is the YAG laser capsulotomy done?

Angel Eye & Cataract Centre has the latest Zeiss YAG Laser at its clinic itself. This facilitates convenience for patients and is a one stop station or solution. Basically patients need not go to a hospital to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is YAG laser capsulotomy safe?

Yes, YAG laser capsulotomy is a well-established, non-invasive procedure with minimal risks. Complication eg. retina tear is possible but is not common, and is itself treatable.

The laser treatment itself takes only a few minutes. The entire visit, including preparation and post-procedure checks, may take about 30 minutes.

No, once the cloudy capsule is removed, PCO does not return, making the treatment a permanent solution.

You can resume most activities immediately after the procedure. However, you may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for a short period.

Most patients experience clearer vision within hours of the procedure once the pupil resume its normal size after the dilation eyedrops wear off, Most will take a day or two to see the full improvement.
