LASIK Eye Surgery: A Safe and Effective
Vision Correction

Experience clearer vision with Dr Allan Fong, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist
What Is Lasik?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular and effective laser eye surgery designed to correct common vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. By reshaping the cornea, LASIK improves how light is focused on the retina, offering clearer vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Many patients experience significant improvements in their vision shortly after the procedure, and recovery is generally quick.

Benefits of LASIK
Long-lasting Results

Once the cornea is reshaped, the effects of LASIK are typically permanent, meaning you can enjoy clearer vision for many years.

Quick Recovery

LASIK is a minimally invasive procedure with a fast recovery time. Many patients notice improved vision within 24 hours and can return to normal activities within a few days.

Improved Vision

Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after LASIK, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Cost-effective

Over time, LASIK can save money by reducing the need for new glasses, contact lenses, and cleaning solutions.

Convenience

No more daily reliance on glasses or contacts, making everyday activities like sports, swimming, and travelling easier.

Boost in Confidence

Enjoy the freedom of clear vision without the need for corrective lenses, which can lead to increased self-confidence.

Evaluation for LASIK

Before undergoing LASIK, a comprehensive eye evaluation is necessary to determine if you are a suitable candidate. The evaluation includes:

Icon of an eye health screening procedure

Eye health assessment

Checking for underlying eye conditions such as dry eyes, infections and glaucoma.

Corneal thickness measurement

Ensuring the cornea is thick enough for reshaping.

Vision stability

Verifying that your glasses or contact lens prescription has remained stable for at least a year.

Pupil size analysis

Large pupils can increase the risk of side effects like glare or halos.

Overall health assessment

Patients with certain health conditions, such as autoimmune diseases or diabetes, may not be ideal candidates.

Steps in LASIK

Dr Allan Fong performs LASIK at SNEC Laservision with the Zeiss Visumax 800. The LASIK procedure involves the following steps:

1

Numbing the eye

Anaesthetic eye drops are applied to prevent any discomfort during the procedure.

2

Creating a corneal flap

Using a femtosecond laser, a thin, hinged flap is created on the surface of the cornea.

3

Reshaping the cornea

The excimer laser is used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error.

4

Repositioning the flap

The corneal flap is then gently placed back into position, where it heals naturally without stitches.

The entire procedure usually takes about 10–15 minutes per eye, and most patients report improved vision within a day or two after surgery.

The Bladeless LASIK Procedure

The Bladeless LASIK procedure, often referred to as All-Laser LASIK or Femtosecond LASIK, represents a modern advancement in vision correction surgery, and is the most common type of LASIK today.

It uses a femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap rather than a traditional microkeratome blade, making the procedure more precise and safer. The femtosecond laser emits ultra-fast laser pulses that allow for highly precise cuts, resulting in a thinner, more uniform flap. This precision allows for greater customization and reduces the risk of complications. Bladeless LASIK can lead to more accurate vision correction and a quicker recovery for patients.

It is essential to consult with Dr Allan Fong to determine if Bladeless LASIK is the right option for your specific vision needs and eye health.

Types of LASIK procedures

There are several forms of LASIK, each tailored to different eye conditions and patient needs. Here are some common types:

Bladeless LASIK

Also known as Femto-LASIK, this is the most common type of LASIK today. It uses a femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap rather than a blade, making the procedure more precise and safer. This allows for greater customization, which leads to more accurate vision correction and quicker recovery.

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)

ASA, including PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), is a type of LASIK for patients with thinner corneas. Instead of creating a flap, the outer layer of the cornea is gently removed, and the underlying tissue is reshaped with a laser. While recovery is longer than with traditional LASIK, ASA offers an effective alternative for patients who may not be suitable candidates for other types of LASIK.

Preparing for LASIK

1

Discontinue Contact Lens Use

If you wear contact lenses, Dr Allan Fong may advise you to stop wearing them one week before the pre-LASIK tests. Contacts can temporarily change the shape of your cornea, so giving your eyes time to return to their natural state ensures more accurate measurements.

2

Review Medical History

Dr Allan Fong will review your medical and eye health history. Be sure to discuss any past eye conditions, surgeries, or medications that may affect your suitability for LASIK.

3

Arrange Transportation

On the day of the procedure, your vision may be blurry immediately after surgery. It’s important to arrange for someone to drive you home from the clinic.

4

Plan for Recovery Time

While LASIK has a quick recovery, it’s a good idea to take at least a day or two off from work or other activities. Avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, or rubbing your eyes in the first few days post-surgery to aid healing.

5

Follow Pre-Op Instructions

Dr Allan Fong may provide specific pre-op instructions, such as avoiding lotions, creams, makeup, or perfumes on the day of surgery, as these could interfere with the procedure.

Side Effects of LASIK

While LASIK is generally safe and effective, like any surgical procedure, it comes with potential side effects. Most are temporary and resolve during the healing process, but it’s important to be aware of them.

Dry Eyes
Dry Eyes

LASIK can temporarily reduce tear production, causing dry eyes for a few weeks to months post-surgery. Eye drops are usually prescribed to manage this, and the condition often improves with time.

Under- or Over-Correction

In some cases, the laser may not remove enough or remove too much corneal tissue, leading to under- or over-correction of your vision. This can sometimes require a follow-up procedure known as an enhancement.

Glare, Halos, and Starbursts

Some patients experience visual disturbances such as glare, halos around lights, or starbursts, especially at night. These typically subside within a few weeks but may persist in some cases.

Infection or Inflammation

Although rare, infection or inflammation may occur after LASIK. Following post-operative care instructions and using prescribed antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drops can help prevent this.

Fluctuating Vision

Your vision may fluctuate during the first few days or weeks as your eyes heal. It’s common for vision to gradually stabilise over the healing period.

If you experience any persistent or concerning side effects, it’s important to follow up with Dr Allan Fong to address them promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK
Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Most people with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism are good candidates for LASIK. However, a thorough evaluation by your doctor is essential to confirm if the procedure is right for you.

The procedure itself is painless due to the use of numbing eye drops. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or dryness after the surgery, but this typically subsides within a few days.

Most patients experience improved vision within 24–48 hours after LASIK. However, full recovery can take a few weeks, during which time you may need to avoid strenuous activities and follow post-op care instructions.

As with any surgery, LASIK carries some risks, such as dry eyes, glare, halos and under-correction. These side effects are usually temporary, and Dr Fong will discuss all potential risks with you before the procedure.

Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after LASIK, eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. However, some may still require glasses for certain activities, such as night driving, or as they age (presbyopia).
